Moving from the theoretical to the tactical, if you want to get a first-hand taste of social media, get LinkedIn. It’s easy, it’s social, and it’s just a little bit addictive.
LinkedIn was an easy entrée for me, because you don’t have to share too much personal information. (See my profile.)You can keep your profile strictly focused on your professional life and connect with past and present colleagues, classmates, service providers and fellow professionals. Once you have your profile set up, you invite others connect to you. Your LinkedIn page becomes a web of contacts that speak to your professional social network.
You can also invite folks to write recommendations, validating your skills and professional reach. And, you can do the same for others.
Before you know it, you have a community that speaks about you without you saying a word about yourself. Pretty powerful.
Give it a try. I’d be honored to be invited to be one of your connections!
