Example from TJHSST of How NOT to Send E-mail

Welcoming our family to another school year with Fairfax County Public Schools is this e-mail from my daughter’s school, Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology:

While the message seems well written, it starts in my favorite customer service manner by telling me that it is automated (no person involved here!) and that I can’t reply to it (listen to us but please, we don’t want to hear from you!). I also like the fact that the name of the school is wrong and that the footer at the end of the message then tells me to unsubscribe by replying to the e-mail.

All in all, this is not a great way to start a relationship with parents.

TJHSST and FCPS can do much better than this…

New Road Markings on TJHSST Campus
This message is auto-generated and will not accept replies. If you have a specific question or comment, please contact the school directly. Thank you. Please note the new road markings on the TJHSST campus!

In an effort to better protect our students we have added three new pedestrian crosswalks. There are multiple painted reminders that the speed limit on TJ grounds is 15 MPH. To better transition the morning and evening traffic rushes, we have added arrows and yields.

The front of the building around the island has two lanes. As you enter campus, please steer to the left if you plan to drop or pick up your child in front of the building. Directly in front of the building, we have added a through lane and a drop off and a pick up lane to ensure effective traffic flow, and more, to better ensure the safety of students exiting vehicles. When you enter the drop off or pick up lane, proceed as far forward as you can in the lane to the right, not blocking the left through lane, rather than stopping immediately and blocking the forward progress of others.

If you plan to exit via the access road or drive to the rear of the building, please stay to the right as you enter TJ grounds. Remind your children to exit from the vehicle from the passenger side and never from the driver’s side.

There are six visitor parking spaces in the front of the building, three along the island, and three by the cafeteria. We have additional parking for volunteers and visitors in the row marked 1 – 18, across from the cafeteria in the senior lot. Please do not park in any reserved spaces for staff and teachers who need to get to their duty stations immediately.

Please note that there is no left turn out of the campus at the main entrance between 8 and 8:30am.

With these simple procedures in place, observing the pedestrian crosswalks, obeying the posted 15 MPH speed limit, pulling up as far as you can in the drop off/ pick up lane, and following directional arrows, students will be safer and traffic will flow more smoothly.
