Younger Folks More Likely to Use Twitter

Pew Internet & American Life just released another report: Twitter and Status Updating.

The report offers insightful data on microblogging as of December 2008. Use of twitter and other microblogging sites broke down as follows:

  • 11% of all online American adults
  • 19% of online adults ages 18 and 24
  • 20% of online adults 25 to 34
  • 10% of 35 to 44 year olds
  • 5% of 45 to 54 year olds
  • 4% of 55-64 year olds
  • 2% of those 65 and older

The use of Twitter is highly intertwined with the use of other social media. Blogging and social network use increase the likelihood than an individual also uses Twitter. Microbloggers are also much more likely to be using wireless technologies for Internet access and cell phones for text messaging.
