Social Media Lurkers

Last week I had the opportunity to join the webinar “Follow. Share. Post. Develop a Social Media News Strategy for Your Company.” The event was sponsored by TekGroup and featured the results of some research they recently conducted.

I walked away with a few good reminders for anyone communicating with social media.

Lurkers Are Large

90 percent of social media users lurk and never contribute. (9 percent contribute a little an 1 percent account for almost all the action. So, if you only focus on the comments made, you are really only engaging with 1 percent of your audience.

Content Rules

Content needs to be “compelling, engaging, interesting or valuable.” Enough said.

Websites as Social Media Portals

Some websites are now serving as portals to brands on social media. Examples:

Vail Ski Report: http://www.vail.com/home.aspx

Starbucks: http://www.starbucks.com/
