The press release you learned how to write in college may be dead, but the press release as a PR tool certainly is not. A release written with today’s media needs in mind is still a great way to create awareness and gain coverage.
One of the best resources I have seen for creating a release that is optimized for today’s media is “How to Write a Press Release” at ereleases.com. It starts with three of the biggest mistakes made in most releases:
- Write an advertisement in the form of a press release
- Write a feature-length news article intended for the public
- Write a long-winded, boring release full of sensationalist jargon
What follows is a great analysis of each element of a great release, summarized in the graphic below.
