Hemingway Editor is a great, free tool that can help you to improve everything you write. It’s like a spellchecker for style. It makes sure that your reader will focus on your message.
The Hemingway Editor will highlight (in yellow and red) where your writing is too dense. It calls attention to places where you have used an adverb instead of a powerful verb. It helps you to eliminate complicated works and replace them with simple, clear words that improve chances that your reader will understand you. It helps snuff out passive voice.
The tool also ranks your content for readability. Readability is a ranking of how understandable a piece of writing is, often presented in terms of U.S. grade level. Hemingway judges the grade level of text using the Automated Readability Index. Studies have shown the average American reads at a tenth-grade level — so that’s a good target.
Write and Edit Modes
You can work with the tool in both write and edit modes. Writing mode allows you to compose without distraction. In edit mode you get feedback on issues that can be improved to make your writing better.
Hemingway also has text formatting tools, like bold, italics, bullets, and links. You can also turn paragraphs into different heading sizes.
Hemingway is free via the web. If you buy the desktop version, you also get free upgrades with each new version.
