Social media has been around for about 20 years, give or take, and has certainly grown to be a marketing opportunity in the last 10 years. It’s not surprising that many of my clients feel behind or out of the loop because they have not “mastered” social media for their own marketing and communication needs.
Trust me, you are not alone if you have not figured out how to best use social media for your business.
We’re all still trying to figure out social media, what to do and what to spend. Here’s some recent data:
- According to 2015 CMO Survey from Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business, the majority are still unsure how to approach social media marketing. They also found that social media spending has grown from 3.5% of marketing budgets in 2009 to 11.7% in 2016.
- A North Highland survey of 211 top marketing and advertising execs found that 52% have a limited understanding of who is part of the social communities they’re interacting with.
We are all influenced by the available platforms and the latest rules for each, but the greatest challenge in leveraging social media is taking time to understand your goals. It’s not enough to just be on social media. You need to take a serious look at your business and the goal(s) you want to achieve through social media participation.
Without goals and strategies to get there, you are just spending time. And, none of us can afford to waste time.
So, give yourself a break. Don’t be stalled in considering how social media can help with your marketing and communications by a false belief that you are hopelessly behind on the learning curve. Dig in now. Start by looking and your business and marketing goals. Decide how social media can help you to achieve them. Develop a plan.
Of course, let me know if I can help.
